Summer Vacation Photography for Children

The best thing about photography for children is that you can take photos of ANYTHING! Have fun and see what interesting things you can find to take pictures of. If you want to make memories of your summer vacation, try to get pictures of these things:

The Trip

It doesn’t matter if you’re riding in a car or flying in an airplane. You can take pictures of any exciting things you see during the trip so you can remember them later.

Aim your camera out of the window and take some shots of the scenery. Be careful not to drop it! You can try to get a piece of the car or the plane in the picture so you remember exactly where you took it.

Don’t forget to take pictures of the people traveling with you! Make sure they look happy to be on vacation. Tell them to smile!

Your View

You can take pictures of your view from anywhere you are! Here are some ideas:

  • Out of the car window
  • Out of the airplane window
  • From the hotel or house window
  • If you’re camping, from your tent
  • From the top of a mountain (if you’re hiking!)

ANY view is okay for a picture. It doesn’t have to be a beautiful nature view! Even if you think the view isn’t very exciting, take a few photos so you can remember it later

Nature

You can also take close-up pictures of nature! Try to find small, interesting things around you. Slow down and look around. What do you see?

Look carefully—maybe you like the color of the grass! Or maybe the tree has a cool pattern on the wood. Look for patterns, textures, shapes, and colors

Then get your camera really close and take the picture! If your camera has a little flower icon on it, you can use that for these pictures.

Here are some things in nature to take pictures of:

  • Flowers
  • Trees
  • Grass
  • Sand
  • Stones or rocks
  • Bugs or butterflies
  • Small creatures

Remember to treat all of nature with respect! Be careful not to hurt small creatures or break flowers or trees while you’re taking pictures.

Movement

One of the most fun things to do is take pictures of movement. You can take pictures of anything, even if it isn’t standing still!

See what’s happening around you. Choose “sports mode” on your phone or camera. This is usually a small icon of a running man. Try to take pictures of:

  • Birds flying
  • Cars riding past
  • Waves crashing on the shore
  • Children playing in the water
  • Fairground rides moving
  • Anything that moves fast!

Sunrises/Sunsets

These are some of the most beautiful photos! It’s also great practice for taking pictures of light. This is one of the most important things to learn in photography classes for kids online!

Use the “sunset” setting on your camera or phone for these pictures. Switch it on before you take the pictures, but don’t forget to turn it off when you’re finished!

To take really great sunrise and sunset pictures, use the rule of thirds. This means that you use an imaginary grid to make your pictures look more interesting

Use your imagination to make three different sections on the screen—top, middle, and bottom. Then, do it the other way—left, middle, and right. When you take the picture, try to put the horizon, the sun, and the clouds cleverly inside these sections or on the lines

If you put a person or a tree or something else in front of a sunset, you can take really cool silhouette pictures! This is when the person or tree is completely dark (they look like shadows!).

People

Don’t forget to take pictures of your family! You can take pictures of them all together, or each family member on their own. You can also take pictures with them, like a selfie!

Remember you can also take pictures of them doing things. Here are some ideas!

  • Group family pictures
  • Individual family pictures
  • Pet pictures
  • Everyone in the car
  • People swimming
  • Everyone playing games or sport
  • The whole family with the view behind them
