All kids photography classes for beginners should include a section on self-portraits! Even if you don’t like seeing your own face in pictures, this will teach you how to think in a fun way and take creative photos of yourself!

Let’s learn how to take amazing self-portraits with Sharp Shots so you can always practice your photo skills, even if you’re alone! Here’s our children’s photography course to help you get started.

How to Take a Self Portrait: Kids Photography Classes for Beginners

You can take a self-portrait any time, anywhere, as long as you have your camera! Here are some fun ways to take your own picture. Use the auto setting so it adapts to where you are.

Use Your Reflection

Is there a mirror in your house? You can use it to take pictures of yourself! This is great if you don’t want your face to be in the picture, because the camera will be in front of your face. Even if you’re using your phone, you can hold it in front of your face so you’ll see yourself, but not your face.

Our kids photography classes for beginners will teach this method first, because almost everyone has a mirror close by. You can use a big wall mirror, a bathroom mirror, or even a small mirror. Just aim your camera at the mirror and make sure you see yourself, even if you are behind a camera!

Use Your Shadow

This is a bit of a sneaky self-portrait type, because nobody except you will know who it is! On a sunny day, try to take a picture of your own shadow in a “self portrait” style.

Stand with the sun behind you, so your shadow falls in front of you. This is still a picture of you! It’s just an all-black you with no features… But it’s a unique self-portrait that can also be quite fun.

Try to take one so you can’t see the camera in the shadow. You can even try to take an “action” portrait, of you jumping in the air or doing something funny. You don’t have to be standing still, but make sure to hold your camera tight and have the strap tight around your neck!

Take a Real Selfie

A “real selfie” means holding the camera in front of you, with the lens facing you, and taking a picture like that. It’s easier to do with a smartphone, because you can just use the selfie camera. But with a camera, you can still do it—it just takes more practice!

A children’s photography course might not teach you this, but it’s a good idea to learn! It might feel strange or uncomfortable, but you can do it. Just hold your camera backwards (make sure you can still push the button) and stretch your arm straight out in front of you.

Then smile and click the button! You might need to take many photos to get one you really like, but it’s fun to try.

Use the Self-Timer Function

Most cameras have a timer. See if yours does! If it does, you can place your camera on a table, shelf, or tripod, set the timer for 5 or 10 seconds, and then run in front of it and get ready for the picture. You will also need to practice this, but it might be easier than a proper selfie!

Kids photography classes for beginners might not cover the self-timer function, so you may have to Google it to find out how yours works.

Fun Self-Portrait Ideas – Kids Photography Classes for Beginners

Ready to start taking exciting self-portraits? Here are some ideas to try at home so you get really good at it and have a whole collection of interesting pictures of yourself! Remember, even if you do a children’s photography course, you need to experiment by yourself too.

Capture Your Different Moods

Don’t stay away from the camera when you’re angry or sad! Take self-portraits during all your different moods so you have an “emotion collection”.

You might not feel like taking selfies when you’re not happy, but it’s like a photo diary! You can store your photos in a journal and write something about how you were feeling on that day. It can be interesting to go back later and look at each day and see how your mood was!

Take an Action Selfie!

You don’t have to be standing still to get great self-portraits! Try an action selfie—jump in the air, take one while you’re running, or even just with your hair blowing in the wind, like in the picture below

You might need a tripod and a timer for this kind of self-portrait. You can set a timer for about 10 seconds, run in front of the camera, and do something funny as it takes the picture!

Take Pictures Of Where You Are

If you love to travel, this is perfect! Take selfies whenever you can, but make sure to include the background so people can see where you are. Especially if you’re somewhere amazing like in the mountains or at a well-known landmark!

Dress Up and Have Fun!

You can do anything you want to in your selfies! Dress up in a funny hat or even a mask. Tie ribbons in your hair, or paint your face. Or just make funny faces at the camera! This is YOUR picture, so you can have as much fun as you want.
